"It was love at first sight when I first visited the Big Island of Hawaii almost 30 years ago," says Robert Weiss. "After finally moving here in 2006 I was inspired to begin painting outdoors, and over the ensuing years my fascination with the island has only increased. I'm interested in a wide variety of subjects, from volcanic vistas to the old rusting sugar mills, and most everything in between. I love the challenge of getting onto the canvas what it is that I am seeing and responding to, and to do that as simply and directly as I can."
Bob has nearly 40 years experience as a professional artist in the commercial and fine art fields. He graduated Pratt Institute in 1978 and worked in NYC as an art director, graphic designer, and illustrator. In 1986 he began practicing the old whalers art of scrimshaw, and is still regarded as one of the finest artists in the world in the medium. These days he is totally immersed in the practice and study of the art of painting in oils.
He is represented in Hawaii by the Wishard Gallery in Waimea, One Gallery in Hilo, and the Volcano Art Center at Volcanoes National Park. On the mainland he is represented by the J. Russell Jinishian Gallery in Fairfield, CT, and The Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT.
